Chris Wood coming to Exeter Phoenix (news)
14th December 2009BBC Radio 2 Folk Award-winning musician and composer Chris Wood is set to visit Exeter Phoenix next year.
Wood’s style of English folk appeals to a wide and varied audience. He is an ardent enthusiast for traditional English dance music (with a background in English church music), including Morris and other rituals and ceremonies, but his repertoire also includes much French folk music and traditional Québécois material.
He has converted many an anti-folk fan with his blend of traditional and modern songwriting, and has been hailed by the Irish Times as 'the renaissance man of English folk'.
Often compared to Richard Thompson, his music explores the history of the English-speaking world alongside tales of modern life.
He has worked for many years in a duo with button accordion/melodeon player Andy Cutting.
Q Magazine gave Wood & Cutting's Live At Sidmouth album four stars and put the duo 'at the forefront of the latest wave of British music acts'.
Chris is also a member of the acclaimed Wood, Wilson & Carthy, with Roger Wilson and Martin Carthy.
At the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards 2006, the Best Original Song category was won by Wood and storyteller Hugh Lupton for One In A Million.
Wood was also nominated in the Best Album, Best Traditional Track, and Folk Singer of the Year categories.
In 2009, the Folk Awards recognised Chris as Folk Singer of the Year, and his solo Trespasser record was awarded Album of the Year.
Albion, a two-disc Chris Wood greatest hits package, was released in June.
Catch him in action at the Exeter Phoenix on February 28, 2010. Call 01392 667080 for booking details.
