Grapes of Wrath at the Theatre Royal Plymouth (preview)

11th September 2009

John Steinbeck's heart-rending Great Depression saga The Grapes of Wrath moves to the stage in Plymouth in October.

Christopher Timothy, Sorcha Cusack and Oliver Cotton star in Frank Galati’s adaptation, which runs at the Theatre Royal from October 6 to 10.

The Joads, dirt-poor Oklahoma farmers, lose everything when their land is repossessed after a devastating drought.

In desperation they make an exhausting trek west to California.

Even when the Joads realise California may not be the promised land, there is no choice but to go on.

Christopher Timothy is Pa Joad. His recent theatre credits include tours of Tons of Money, Hay Fever and Heroes and on television he has appeared in Doctors and All Creatures Great and Small.

Oliver Cotton, who plays Jim Casey, has worked extensively at the Royal Shakespeare Company and the National theatre.

Sorcha Cusack is Ma Joad. She, too, has a CV packed with RSC work and also with appearances at the Republic of Ireland’s national theatre, the Abbey. Sorcha’s TV credits include Dalziel and Pascoe, Coronation Street and Casualty.

The Grapes of Wrath reunites the same creative team from Of Mice and Men with design by Simon Higlett, lighting by Tim Mitchell and original music by John Tams.

Tickets are £10-£21 and available from the box office on 01752 267222 or at www.theatreroyal.com
