Olympians set for grand parade in Plymouth (news)
24th October 2008Details have been revealed of a grand parade through Plymouth in honour of local Olympians and Paralympians.
Crowds are expected to gather in the city centre on November 1 to see the star athletes taking to the streets in an open-top bus tour.
Plymouth City Council has announced that the event will include teenage diving finalists Tom Daley and Tonia Couch, both pictured, silver medallist and pentathlete Heather Fell, bronze medallist and swimmer Cassie Patten and table-tennis player David Wetherill.
The route to be followed by the parade, taking in the city centre and The Hoe, has also been unveiled.
Live media broadcasts and interviews with the Olympians will also take place during the celebrations.
The open-top bus will leave the Council House at 10am, before following a route around the Hoe and city centre.
It will take in Princess Street, Notte Street, Southside Street, the Barbican, Madeira Road, Hoe Road, Grand Parade, Great Western Road, West Hoe Road, Millbay Road, the Crescent, Western Approach, Cobourg Street, Charles Street, Exeter Street, Royal Parade and Derrys Cross.
The tour will end at the Olympic Big Screen in Armada Way at around 11am, where council leader Vivien Pengelly will meet the athletes and congratulate them on behalf of the city on their success in Beijing.
A stage is being set up in front of the screen, where BBC Radio Devon presenter David Fitzgerald will interview the athletes about their achievements and footage from their individual competitions will be shown on the screen.
The whole event will be covered live on Radio Devon throughout the morning show.
The athletes will head to the Council House at midday for a civic reception hosted by the Lord Mayor, Councillor Brian Vincent, and Lady Mayoress Pauline Murphy.
Council leader Vivien Pengelly said: “We’re thrilled to be hosting this event in honour of all the local athletes whose inspiring dedication and achievements out in Beijing have made us so proud.
“I hope the people of Plymouth will come into the city centre and celebrate their amazing success.”
The city parade follows the national celebrations held earlier this month. Local Olympic and Paralympic athletes travelled through London on a series of floats as part of a triumphal parade, followed by a reception with the Queen at Buckingham Palace.
