Anna Mazek exhibition in Exmouth (preview)

01st October 2008

Mixing paint means something slightly different to artist Anna Mazek, who uses one of Russia’s most popular exports to enhance her work - on show at Exmouth's Pier Head Gallery.

Rather than just mixing a few colours together, Anna uses vodka to enhance the colours and create a unique effect.

She said: “I mix vodka with acrylic paint, which makes the colours separate and gives a marbled look.

“And the paint is on aluminium foil, which gives it added texture.”

Ms Mazek says the discovery of vodka as a medium was hit on by complete chance.

She said: “I was out for a drink when I saw someone spill some vodka which hit some engine oil and seeing the effect made me think I should try it with acrylic.

“I use Russian vodka as it has a high level of alcohol, higher than something like gin.”

Originally from London, Ms Mazek said the beauty of East Devon, in between Exeter and Exmouth, was a huge inspiration for her work.

She said: “This collection is my autumnal collection and it is inspired by the beautiful scenery in Devon.

“Between Exeter and Exmouth there are all the hills and Woodbury Common.

“And the vistas when you drive to Exmouth are wonderful.”

Emma Bishop, from the Pier Head Gallery, said: “The collection has been received really well. People were able to have a little preview on Sunday night.”

She added: “This collection is definitely based on landscapes, whereas her previous work was based on seascapes. But it is all based around Exmouth and places like Woodbury Common.”
